Brake Pads

Your brake pads are a vital factor of your braking system and they are a part that you your shouldn’t disregard. Friction is caused when the brake pads compress against the brake rotors which causes your car to stop.

So your brake pads are working really hard, really often.. The amount of pressure necessary to stop a moving vehicle is enormous and gives off a lot of heat which causes wear on the brake pads.

Worn brake pads means impaired braking which is hazardous to you and others on the road. Which is why consistent testing and assessments of the state of your brake pads is crucial.

Are there signs a brake pad replacement is due?

If your brakes squeal - that can be a warning that your brake pads are getting thin; many pads have a small metal piece implanted in them which will scrape on the disc when your brake pads are wearing out, causing that high pitch noise. However, isn't any reason to wait until you hear noises to get your pads checked, we advise having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that noisy brakes are not always caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At Athena Automatics we offer a free 65 Point Safety Check with every car service. As part of our Safety Check we inspect the brake pads for wear and let you know if they require replacing. We can also recommend the right pad for your driving style and conditions.

How often should my Brake pads be replaced?

Brake Pads can live anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This changes according to a number of reasons such as; driving conditions, driving style, if you are carrying heavy loads or towing. If your brake pads are wearing out early your mechanic might advise using a heat resistant or heavier duty brake pad more suited to your vehicle.

Can I change the brake pads myself ?

Some things are best left to trained mechanics and this is one of them. You should never let anyone but a qualified professional touch something as keyto your safety as your braking system.
